    Professor Andrew Thompson
    BSc, PhD, DIC

    Chair in Parasitology

    About me

    I obtained my PhD from Imperial College, University of London, and the Diploma of Imperial College.

    Following my PhD, I was appointed to a 12-month temporary academic position in the Department of Applied Zoology at the University of Leeds which gave me an excellent foundation on which to build my research platform once I moved to Murdoch University in 1977. I was invited by the World Health Organization in 1982 to establish, and Head a WHO Collaborating Centre which has greatly enhanced opportunities to build a network of productive international linkages while I have been at Murdoch University. The research undertaken by my group has also benefitted greatly from the facilities provided by the Western Australian State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre. situated on the Murdoch campus.

    I head the Parasitology Section within the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences, and teach parasitology and biomedical sciences to veterinary, biomedical and animal science students. Under my leadership, our Parasitology Section is now recognised internationally as a preeminent centre for research. It is a vibrant, high profile and internationally recognised group that currently comprises over 20 staff and students. In terms of profile, personnel and breadth in research capability, teaching and service, Murdoch University currently has the strongest parasitology group in Australia. This has largely been driven by a focus on the application of molecular biology and diverse parasite systems, the development of strategic alliances with industry and productive local and international collaborations.  Murdoch University was also a driving force in the establishment of the ARC/NHMRC Research Network of Parasitology which continues with financial support from the Australian Society for Parasitology and the European Union. I have been nominated on two separate occasions, to serve as President of the Australian Society for Parasitology.

    Teaching area

    • I teach and coordinate parasitology courses to veterinary (VET344), biomedical (BMS364) and animal science (ANS356) students;
    • I teach components of Advances in Medical Science (BMS368) and Introduction to the Animal Body (ANS102)

    Research areas

    Major areas of interest:

    • Biology, molecular epidemiology and control of parasitic infections of significance to public health and wildlife conservation. Particular emphasis on neglected diseases, those affecting disadvantaged communities, and wildlife diseases,
    • Anti-parasite drug discovery – using novel targets and a range of customised analogues with activity against protozoan and helminth tropical parasitic diseases of medical and veterinary significance.

    Current projects

    Parasite infections of threatened wildlife taking a one health approach

    Parasite zoonoses of wildlife and companion animals

    Molecular epidemiology of parasite zoonoses

    Drug discovery for neglected tropical and neglected protozoan diseases
