About me

I am an Emeritus Professor of New Testament at Murdoch University and an active researcher.  I held a five year Australian Research Council Professorial Fellowship 2005-2010, doing research on: Attitudes towards Sexuality in Judaism and Christianity in the Hellenistic Greco-Roman Era, and Minister of the Uniting Church in Australia.

Teaching area

I have recently taught half a unit called THE477/577 Advanced New Testament Exegesis: Gospel Traditions (2012 S1), but generally I do not teach.

Research areas

From 2005-2010 I was engaged in research on attitudes towards sexuality in early Judaism and Christianity in the Hellenistic Greco-Roman Era. I continue to produce papers based on this research and in addition have strong research interests in the Synoptic Gospels, John and 1 John, Pseudepigrapha, Philo, Josephus, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the historical Jesus.

Awards and grants

Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow 2005-2010

2003 I was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Commonwealth Government for services to Australian society and the humanities in the study of religion

1996 elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA) in recognition of my record in academic research.
