    About me

    • Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Murdoch University Cetacean Research Unit. May 2017 to May 2019.
    • Adjunct Research Fellow at James Cook University. August 2017 to August 2020.
    • Co-Chair of the Sirenian IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) for the PAcific Ocean region. From 2017.

My research focuses on enhancing the scientific understanding of dugong ecology to enable key stakeholders to make informed decisions about dugong conservation and management. I enjoy working with researchers, managers and NGOs from different horizons to develop, test and refine new methods and tools to investigate topics such as dugong abundance, distribution and habitat use. At the moment, my work focuses on developing local-scale aerial surveys using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to assess dugong habitat use in relation to seagrass dynamics in the Pilbara region in Australia. One of the most exciting and rewarding part of my job is to work with local communities on enhancing marine megafauna conservation and management while strengthening the bond between Western science and traditional knowledge.

    Current projects

To develop novel local-scale methods and tools including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to assess dugong habitat use in relation to seagrass habitat dynamics and other environmental factors in the Pilbara region (Australia).
To provide technical advice to researchers, non-government/civil society managers, and decision-makers in dugong range states to enhance their capacity to understand and protect dugongs and their habitats (links to projects I am involved in: http://www.dugongconservation.org).
