Local Government Professional Development
This work involves delivering a two-day professional development series to local government staff and elected members in regional areas throughout WA. These workshops examine the role and practices of community development workers in local government authorities.
Conservation Agreement:
The work involves supporting West Pilbara Indigenous groups to work in conjunction with various partners to create, implement and review research, monitoring, transmission, protection and management projects designed to maintain the National Heritage Values of the Burrup Peninsula.
Review of the Yiriman Project:
This is a three year ‘participants observation’ research study of a ten-year old community-based cultural development and youth diversionary programme. The Yiriman Project is based in the Kimberley Aboriginal and Law and Culture Centre, one of the longest-standing regional Aboriginal organisations.
Human values and aspirations for coastal waters of the Kimberley (Moore, Strickland-Munro, Palmer, Rodger, Kobryn, Burton, Kragt and Smith)
This project is part of the WA Marine Science Institute’s Kimberley Coast Research Study. It involves researching the social values Indigenous and non-Indigenous people attach to the Kimberley coast. It includes systematically mapping these values and understanding the contrasting uses of coastal areas.
The Aboriginal Fathering Project:
Dr Palmer joins a team led by Professor Len Collard in work commissioned by The Fathering Project WA. This project involves carrying out a review of the literature concerned with Aboriginal fathering and parenting; consulting with a small number of Aboriginal men about their wisdom in relation to fathering; producing five short films featuring themes associated with good Aboriginal fathering and designing and trialling a workshop designed to support Aboriginal fathers. This project is focused on the lives of Aboriginal men in Noongar (south-west WA) country. Dr Palmer is responsible for the literature review and is supporting the filming elements of the project.
SharingStories Project:
Dr Palmer will be acting as the reviewer of this five-year old media recording and community development programme. The SharingStories Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that specialising in running workshops in remote Aboriginal communities and works in conjunction with the local school, senior cultural custodians, young people and their families. Together they introduce young people to state of the art digital platforms as a way of recording ancient stories and ‘songs’, building literacy and encouraging intergenerational contact transmission. Dr Palmer’s work includes offering advice and observations and producing co-written accounts of the efficacy of the practice of digital recording.
