About me
G. E. J. Poinern holds Ph.D. in Physics from Murdoch University, Western Australia. Currently he is a Senior Lecturer in Physics and Nanotechnology in the School of Engineering and Information Technology at Murdoch University. He is the Director of Murdoch Applied Nanotechnology Research Group, Murdoch University. In 2003, he discovered and pioneered the use of an inorganic nanomembrane for potential skin tissue engineering applications. He is the recipient of a Gates Foundation Global Grand Challenge Exploration Award for his work in the development of biosynthetic materials and their subsequent application in the manufacture of biomedical devices.

Awards
- Dr Poinern was a top ten finalist (field out of 100) in the 2008 for the West Australian Inventor of the year for his development of a nano-porous membrane for tissue engineering applications and for the creation of Murdoch University’s Spin-Off Company Cellumina.

Demonstrated contribution toward the betterment of the School
- Through Dr Poinern’s stewardship and mentoring the Murdoch University Nano Group has attracted 4 West Australian State Government Science Innovation Student awards for the school in the area of Nanotechnology
- Mr Ravi Brundavanam (Honours and PhD student) was awarded the Royal Society Science Prize for his nano-hydroxyaptite ceramic work in 2008. The award was used to promote the opportunities available for prospective Murdoch University students.
- Ms. Xuan Le (Nanoscience PhD Student) won the Prime Minister’s Australian Asia Endeavour Award for 2009 and was able to undertake studies at the University of Singapore. During Ms Le stay she was a speaker at a number of presentations sponsored by the Australian Commonwealth government promoting Australia, Murdoch University and the School of Engineering and Energy as a study destination
- Dr Poinern’s postgraduate and honours students are regular presenters at the Australian Institute of Physics Forum where they showcase their research work at the State level
- Dr Poinern is highly proactive in promoting Murdoch Science: he developed a week long Nanotech Lab for Melville Senior High School as well as hosted gifted students for the State Biogenius Challenge. Furthermore, Gerrard is very proactive in trying to attract high calibre potential students for studies at Murdoch. As recently as last year, he wrote proposals for 4 international students for the Commonwealth Endeavour Awards 2012.
