BVSc (Hons), MS, PhD, FACVSc, Dipl. ACVS

    Professor in Small Animal Surgery

    About me

I took up the position of Professor and Head of Small Animal Surgery at Murdoch University in June 2009 after having spent 20 years at Louisiana State University.  I head the Soft Tissue and Oncologic Surgery Referral Service in the Murdoch University Teaching Hosptial. I am a board certified surgery specialist, certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists.  I was in fact the first woman to be certified as a surgery specialist by the Australian and New Zealand College.  I have considerable experience in all facets of surgery but am particularly interested in abdominal surgery and wound reconstruction and have internationally-recognised expertise in these areas.

I have taught for over 20 years in American and Australian veterinary schools, teaching fundamentals of surgery and soft tissue surgery topics to preclinical students and working with students in the clinical curriculum in the teaching hospital. I have developed multiple surgical courses, developed laboratory teaching curricula including development of surgical models, and developed clinical curricula including problem-based learning.

As a surgery specialist, I have been responsble for training 17 residents over the last 23 years that have been certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. I am currently training 4 residents in Small Animal Surgery at Murdoch University.  I have had a leadership role in developing the residency program at Murdoch which is continuing to expand and currently trains between 15-20 residents across a six specialty disciplines.

My research interests have crossed species and clinical disciplines, in part due to my experitise and interest in clinical study design and analysis (having completed my PhD in epidemiology and biostatistics).  I have conducted both experiemental and clinical research investigating peritonitis, revascularisation of skin grafts in animals, and investigation into the pathophysiology of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug toxicosis in dogs. I am currently investigating the pathophysiology of bupivicaine toxicity, and collaborating with other veterinarians at Murdoch on biomechanical testing or orthopedic implants, coagulation abnormalities, anaesthesia protocols and  endocrinopathies.  I am also continuing to develop clinical techniques in the treatment of intrahepatic portocaval shunts, a congential anomalies seen in dogs and cats.

I have published extensively in the veterinary literature including results of both experimental investigations and clinical studies. Book chapters include efforts on abdominal surgery and wound healing/management. I was an associate editor of Veterinary Surgery, the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, since 2011. I have been the Editor of the Australian Veterinary Practitioner, the official journal of the Australian Small Animal Veterinary Association, since 2011 and am co-editor of the Australian Veterinary Journal, the official journal of the Australian Veterinary Association.

    Teaching area

I currently lead a team of three academics that teach the fundamental surgery principles and small animal surgery units in the veterinary curriculum.  This curriculum includes a unit on fundamental principles of surgery (VET459) taught to third year veterinary students. This course includes didactic material as well as laboratory teaching that focuses on the use of surgical models to allow the student to develop surgical skills. This unit covers principles that cross species and provide the basis for surgicla teaching in Equine and Food Animal units. This fundamental unit focuses on encouraging the student to apply the basic knowledge to clinical scenarios and ”real life” situations.

A yearlong course (VET457) is taught to 4th year veterinary students. This course includes both soft tissue and orthopedic didactic material presented over one semester with two semesters of extensive laboratory experience. The laboratories make use of additional  surgical model teaching, include intensive case-based application of knowledge as well as introduce the student to live animal surgical experiences through our “Spay Clinic”, a community outreach service that supports local animal shelters.

Our final year students are introduced to clinical service in the small animal surgical rotation (VET530) in the MU Veterinary Hospital. This unit includes active participation in the surgery service, as well as extension through the Spay Clinic, and further laboratory learning.

I have been an active participant and leader in development of OSCE examination in Small Animal Practice, applying OSCE examinations to the the third year unit, the fourth year unit and now the 5th year unit.  This is combined with development of online examinations that inlcude clinical material and clinical, case-based questioning.

    Research areas

I have a research interest in clinical study design and analysis, with particular interest in survival analysis. Through this interest, I am collaorate with many veterinary clinicians across disciplines in developing and conducting clinical studies.  I am currently collaborating on studies in toxicosis, endocrinopathies, urinary tract infections, anaesthetic protocols in horses, fracture management in dogs and cats  and management of intrahepatic shunts in dogs.

I have had a recent interest in investigation into the mechanism of toxicity of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs in dogs. this has involved in vitro examination using Ussing chamber methodology.

    Professional and community service

I spend 40-42 weeks a year working in the Murdoch University Teaching Hospital which services the local and rural veterinary community. I share with our surgery team, the responsibility to provide emergency and weekend/public holiday service to the hospital 365 days a year.  Through our surgery laboratories, we provide a subsidized spay clinic as outreach to local independent shelter groups and low income families.
