    Professor Ian Potter
BA (Oxford University), Phd (University of New South Wales)

    Research Professor

    About me

I obtained my first degree from Oxford University where I obtained a BA in Zoology in 1962. I then moved to Australia and eventually to the University of New South Wales where I was a Senior Tutor and obtained a PhD for a study of the biology of lampreys, one of two surviving groups of jawless vertebrates. On the completion of my PhD in 1968, I was employed as a Postdoctoral Instructor at Duke University in the United States for a year. The Science Research Council in the United Kingdom then awarded me a Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue my studies on lampreys at the University of Bath. After two years, that University then appointed me firstly as a Lecturer and then as a Senior Lecturer. I moved to Murdoch University in 1976 to take up the inaugural position of Professor of Animal Biology and then eventually Research Professor, the position I still hold. During my time at Murdoch, I have spent periods visiting other Universities and Institutions where I undertook joint research. This included Guelph University, University of Toronto, Bath University, Munich University and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory.

I have supervised over 40 PhD students and obtained more than $15 million in research funding.

I have published over 350 papers in peer-reviewed journals, have a Hirsch factor of 41 and am an ISI highly cited scientist.

    Research areas

I have published over 370 peer review papers and book chapters.

I have worked on lampreys throughout my academic career. Lampreys are an important group of vertebrates for the following reasons. 1) As they are one of the two surviving groups of jawless fishes, and thus represent an early offshoot of the vertebrate lineage, they are frequently used for elucidating trends exhibited during early vertebrate evolution. 2) They are one of the most numerous vertebrates in many rivers in temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and thus play a key role in the ecology of those systems. 3) The adult parasitic phase in the life cycle of certain species has also been responsible for massive mortalities among important recreational and commercial fish species. My work on lampreys has involved studies of the taxonomy and evolution of this group and has focused in particular on the taxa found in the Southern Hemisphere, about which little was known prior to my PhD. I have also collaborated with a number of colleagues on ecological, physiological and biochemical studies on lampreys. The results of the ecological studies have led to a greater understanding of the duration of life, growth and behaviour of the different phases in the life cycles of a number of species.

The second main area of my research has concentrated on working with numerous staff and research students in studies aimed at determining the biological characteristics of a wide range of fish species. As a number of these species are of commercial and/or recreational importance, the results of these studies have provided fisheries and environmental managers with the types of data they require for managing and conserving natural resources. These studies have also been aimed at exploring a number of contemporary theories, such as the Metabolic Theory of Ecology.

The third area of research has involved work on estuaries in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The results of these studies has increased our understanding of the factors that influence the density, diversity and compositions of particularly of the fish faunas in these systems and have emphasised the role of estuary type, e.g. permanently vs seasonally-open and normally closed, on those characteristics. Recently, together with a number of colleagues, emphasis has been placed on examining the impact of anthropogenic changes on faunal communities in estuaries.

    Current projects

    Current Research projects

    • The dietary compositions of the abundant demersal fish species in the coastal waters of south-western Australia and a construction of a readily interpretable food web for those waters.
    • The biology of a number of commercially and and/or recreationally important fish species.
    • The ecology of the fish and invertebrate communities in the estuaries of south-western Australia.
    • The phylogeny of lampreys.

These studies are all being conducted with staff and students at Murdoch University, and in the case of the studies of the eye, with those at the University of Western Australia
