Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology

About me

I am the Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University.

I graduated from the University of Queensland in 1979 with my veterinary degree and then worked for the Department of Primary Industries at Chinchilla, Queensland for 5 years. During this time I was involved in the Australian national campaign to eradicate brucellosis and tuberculosis from cattle as well as undertaking herd health and disease
investigations. One of my most memorable disease investigations was investigating the sudden death of 101 cattle on the Darling Downs. This resulted in one of my first publications and prompted my interest in epidemiology.

From 1985 to 1987 I undertook a PhD at Massey University, New Zealand on the Epidemiology of Streptococcus suis in pigs and humans. I was fortunate to be supervised by Professor David Blackmore who both mentored and challenged me and my postgraduate experience has had a lasting impact on me. This highlighted the importance of having a good supervisor when undertaking post-graduate training.

In 1988 I again worked for the Department of Primary Industries as a Divisional Veterinary Officer in Toowoomba. However in 1989 my family and I crossed the continent so that I could take up a position as Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology at Murdoch University and I have been here since then.

I was Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science from 2002 to 2009, School Dean in 2010 and 2011, Associate Dean Clinical, Academic and International in 2012 and in 2013 and 2014 was the inaugural Principal of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Since then I have been focusing on International Affairs and recruitment for the College and graduate education in the discipline of Epidemiology.

Teaching area

I am responsible for the teaching of epidemiology in the School. I coordinate and teach epidemiology to third year veterinary students in Animal Systems III (VET442) and Advanced Topics in Veterinary Science (VET546) to final year students.

However my major contribution to teaching is through coursework Masters and research degrees.

I developed the Masters of Veterinary Studies (Veterinary Surveillance) in 2006 and coordinate and teach Principles of Epidemiology (VET641), Practical Applications of Epidemiology (VET642), Epidemiological Studies: Design and Analysis (VET699) and the Surveillance Project (VET649) to Masters students.

Details of my current and completed graduate (research) students are available under Doctoral and Masters Supervisions.

Research areas

My research has focused on the epidemiology of diseases of domestic and wild animals, as well as zoonotic diseases.

Most of my research, particularly that through my graduate students, has focused on the major transboundary diseases including Foot and Mouth Disease, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, Brucellosis, Classical Swine Fever and Rabies. Studies on these diseases means that most of my research is conducted in South-East Asia, and in particular Indonesia, where I have had research projects for 20 years.

In recent years projects have also been involved in elucidating the epidemiology of diseases in Africa and the Middle East.

What drives me is the potential for research to make a real difference to the livelihood of
subsistence farmers, improving biosecurity and sustainable food security. I believe simple solutions are best!

Current projects

I am fortunate in having numerous postgraduate students who are the real power-house of my research. These students are working on a range of projects all epidemiologically based and include investigating Foot and mouth disease, brucellosis, rabies, influenza viruses, leptospirosis, avian influenza and trypanosomiasis.

Professional and community service

One of the key areas of community service I have been fortunate to be involved is in training of indigenous environmental health workers in Western Australia. In particular I train and empower health workers to be responsible for dogs in communities.

Doctoral and masters supervisions

I have supervised 38 students to completion of a PhD, 3 complete an MPhil, 21 complete a Masters of Veterinary Studies, 4 RMT (Research Masters in Training) and 9 First Class honours. Currently I have 20 research students including 17 PhD students, 1 DVetMedSci, and 2 RMT students. These students have originated from many countries including Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia,
Singapore, China, Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia, Nepal, Macau, Bhutan, Papua New
Guinea and Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Somaliland, Libya, and Italy. These students come from very diverse backgrounds and locations (see the world map of the origin of my research students).
