Associate Professor - Veterinary Pathology

About me

I am an Associate Professor in Pathology and a registered specialist in Veterinary Pathology.

I coordinate and participate in the anatomic pathology consultancy within the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences, which provides post-mortem examinations and biopsy interpretation for Veterinarians. I also coordinate the general pathology unit for veterinary students and teach in the general pathology unit for biomedical science, chiropractic and animal science students, and the systemic and practical pathology units for third and fourth year veterinary students. I have undertaken research and published reports on animal species ranging from invertebrates (oysters) to reptiles and mammals; however I have a special interest in dermatopathology.

Teaching area

I teach general pathology to veterinary, biomedical science, chiropractic and forensic science students; and systemic and diagnostic anatomical pathology to undergraduate and post-graduate veterinary students.

I have been principal supervisor or co-supervisor for 16 post graduate students undertaking specialist veterinary training (6 completions, 10 current trainees) and 8 post graduate students undertaking examination at a membership level (6 completions, 2 current trainees).

Research areas

I am the chief investigator and a collaborator on a diverse range of research projects. My most recent work has included investigating a papillomatosis and carcinomatosis syndrome in marsupial bandicoots in which our group has identified a novel family of viruses with features of both papilloma and polyoma viruses. I currently have 6 post graduate students whose projects are based on the study of disease in laboratory rodents, export cattle, dogs and wildlife. I also provide an anatomic pathology service for researchers and have undertaken studies using animal models of human disease to evaluate gene therapy, parasiticidal agents and antineoplastic drugs.

Current projects

My current projects are looking at the causes of mortality in live export cattle, respiratory disease in laboratory rats, reproductive success in loggerhead turtles, and the use of intrathecal magnesium in a sheep model.

Awards and grants

Through my research collaborations and consultancies I have been able to obtain over $984,000 in external funding.

Events and speaking engagements

I have given over 20 presentations at national and international conferences and was invited to chair the session of infectious and transmissible cancers and also present a paper at the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) meeting in Baltimore, Maryland in October 2010.
