Lecturer in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care

    About me

I am a Lecturer in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC). I received my veterinary degree from the University of Florida in 2006. I then went on to complete an internship at the University of Pennsylvania and a residency in ECC at the University of California Davis. I became a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2010. My interests include transfusion medicine, electrolyte abnormalities, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and extracorporeal organ support.

    Teaching area

I lecture to third year veterinary students on the following topics: Blood gas analysis, triage, traumatic brain injury, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intoxications, and envenomations.

This year I am also teaching several topics in an ECC Masters course including Transfusion medicine, arterial blood gas analysis, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation

I also conduct weekly student tutorials for fifth year veterinary students on the ECC clinical rotation, and weekly resident tutorials for our ECC residents.

    Research areas

Cytokine levels in stored canine blood products

    Leukoreduction

Febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions and systemic inflammation

    Current projects

Cytokine levels in stored canine blood products and the effect of leukoreduction on these levels

Incidence of febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions in the canine population pre- and post-introduction of leukoreduced blood products

    Events and speaking engagements

Science Week 2013 – Will be presenting on a variety of topics including Thromboelastography, pulmonary function analysis using arterial blood gases, physiology of innate immunity

MOVE series – June 2013: Will be presenting the newest RECOVER cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines

9 Sep, 2012: Presented a Case Report on Propylene Glycol Intoxication in a dog at the International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society Meeting

22-23 July, 2012: Presented on traumatic brain injury and cardiopulmonary resuscitation on day one of the Emergency Medicine continuing education seminar held on-campus. On day two, I directed and taught a CPR wetlab to all seminar attendees.
