    Professor Michael Jones
BA Natural Sciences, Biochemistry (Cantab), MA (Cantab), PhD (Cantab)

    Professor - Agricultural Biotechnology

    About me

My first degree was in Natural Sciences, specialising in Biochemistry, at Cambridge University, UK.  This was followed by a PhD in Plant Biochemistry at Cambridge University, and Postdoc positions at the University of Missouri, USA (Plant Pathology), and ANU (RSBS, Developmental Biology), three months with Prof OH Lowrie at Washington University, St Louis, USA (microtechniques), and back to the Biochemistry Department at Cambridge University for 3 years.  I was then employed as a Senior Scientific Officer at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station (Aberystwyth) as part of the ARC Genetic Manipulation Program, and then Principal Scientific Officer at Rothamsted Experimental Station (now Rothamsted Research), as Plant cell Biology Co-ordinator in the Department of Biochemistry.  After 8 years in that position I was appointed as Professor of Plant Sciences at Murdoch University in late 1990.  I became Foundation Director of WA State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre  (SABC) in 1993, and my title changed to Professor of Agricultural Biotechnology in 2003.

Over a five year period I developed the Centre for Crop and Food Innovation, including its Business Plan and endorsement by the Universiy Research committe and VC, and became the Foundation Director of this major university centre.

I have supervised more than 70 PhD students, obtained more than $45 million in competitive research grants, and published 297 scientific publications.

    Teaching area

I continue to contribute to a range of teaching Units - from Animals, Plants and Ecosystems, Cell Biology; Biochemistry II, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Plant Science and Technology, Plant Biotechnology and Proteomics, Food for Thought, Food Matters, Agricultural Science and Food Production, Crop Protection and Plant Biosecurity, Agricultural and Environmental Technologies (Co-ordinator)

In the SABC I have contributed to a range of specialist vocational courses, numerous Seminars, presentations to visiting groups etc.

    Research areas

I have published 300 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and two books. I head the Crop Biotechnology Research Group (CBRG), based in the SABC.

The CBRG now focuses on the following research areas, with an empahsis on translation of research results to practice.:

    • The molecular basis of nematode -plant interactions and their control
    • The molecular basis of aphid-plant interactions and their control
    • Gene-editing of potato for improved consumer traits
    • Developing new approaches to abiotic stress (drought, frost) tolerance in wheat
    • Developing low saponin varieties of quinoa for Australian agriculture
    • Gene-editing technologies, their application, national and international regulation
    • Science diplomacy to harmonise national and international regulations of gene-edited products, and their use in crop improvement

    Current projects

    Current research projects:

    • Application of RNAi to confer resistance to nematode pathogens in crop plants – this work includes study of cyst, root-knot and root lesion nematodes, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology and transgenic plants
    • Application of RNAi to confer resistance to aphids in crop plants
