Professor - Agricultural Biotechnology

About me

My first degree was in Natural Sciences, specialising in Biochemistry, at Cambridge University.  This was followed by a PhD in Plant Biochemistry at Cambridge University, and Postdoc positions at the University of Missouri, USA (Plant Pathology), and ANU (RSBS, Developmental Biology), then three months with Prof OH Lowrie at Washington University, St Louis, USA (learning microtechniques), and back to the Biochemistry Department at Cambridge University for 3 years.  My first established job was as a Senior Scientific Officer at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station (Aberystwyth) as part of the ARC Genetic Manipulation Program, followed by promotion to Principal Scientific Officer at Rothamsted Experimental Station (now Rothamsted Research), as Plant cell Biology Co-ordinator in the Department of Biochemistry.  After 8 years in that position I was appointed as Professor of Plant Sciences at Murdoch University in late 1990.  I became Foundation Director of WA State Agricultural Biotechnology Centre  (SABC) in 1993, and my title changed to Professor of Agricultural Biotechnology in 2003.

I have supervised 40 PhD students and obtained more than $30 million in competitive research grants.

Teaching area

I have contributed to a range of Units over the years – Animals, Plants and Ecosystems; Cell Biology; Biochemistry II, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Plant Science and Technology, Plant Biotechnology and Proteomics and Food for Thought.  Within the SABC I have contributed to a range of specialist vocational courses, numerous Seminars, presentations to visiting groups etc.

Research areas

I have published 254 peer reviewed papers, book chapters and two books. I head the Plant Biotechnology Research Group (PBRG), based in the SABC.

The PBRG is now world leading in two areas, plant-nematode and plant virus interactions, with developing work on aphid plant interactions and their control.

Nematode pathogens are major crop pests worldwide, and cause losses of about $120 billion pa.  In Australia they reduce yields of wheat, barley, sugarcane and many horticultural crops by 7-15%.  Infection is accompanied by water stress and nutrient deficiencies. The PBRG has pioneered de novo Roche 454 FLX sequencing of the transcriptomes of economically important root lesion (Pratylenchus spp.) and cyst nematode (Heterodera) species.  From this work, making use of comparative genomics, gene targets that can be used to confer host resistance to these pests have been identified, and a series of transgenic plants with inherent resistance to these pests have been generated and patented.  A focus of current work is to identify genes and effectors involved in nematode parasitism, and to find new targets for their control.

This research strategy has now been extended to study- insect-plant interactions, in particular for aphid control.

With Dr Steve Wylie the PBRG leads the application of next generation sequencing in plant virology in Australia. Current work focuses on studying virus interchange between crops and endemic flora, and identifying new viruses in the 8,000 species of plants endemic to the SW of WA.  As leaders in applying new sequencing technologies to plant virus research, we have already identified >200 new plant viruses, some of which are completely novel – this is just early days for application of these technologies.  Current work focuses on the possibility that some plant viruses are beneficial to host plants, and on viruses of endemic terrestrial orchids

  • application of RNAi to confer resistance to nematode pathogens in crop plants – this work includes study of cyst, root-knot and root lesion nematodes, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology and transgenic plants – with Dr John Fosu-Nyarko
  • application of RNAi to confer resistance to aphids in crop plants
  • using new sequencing technologies to find new plant viruses – with Dr Steve Wylie and Dr M. Saqib
  • studying plant viruses in native plants, and their potential to be beneficial rather than be pathogens

Awards and grants

I have obtained many ARC Discovery, Linkage and LIEF grants, and grants from the GRDC, ISL, HAL and industry sources.  Current research funding includes -Linkage and Australia India Strategic Research Fund.

I was awarded the Murdoch University Medal for sustained research in 2006.
