    Dr. Mieghan Bruce
    BSc, BVMS, MSc, PhD

    Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology

    About me

I am a Lecturer in Veterinary Epidemiology at Murdoch University, Australia. My research interests focus on integrating epidemiologic, economic and social dimensions of food systems for improving human nutrition and health. This has involved developing methodology to quantify the contributions of the different pathways from livestock health interventions to child nutritional outcomes in Tanzania. My PhD entitled The impact of brucellosis in Albania: a systems approach was undertaken at the Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health (LCIRAH), University of London

Prior to joining Murdoch, I worked at the Institute of Infection and Global Health, University of Liverpool exploring methods to establish the Global Burden of Animal Disease. In 2015, I was awarded an IMMANA Postdoctoral Fellowship through the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University. During this time I collaborated with an interdisciplinary team from the University of Sydney on project funded by ACIAR. I have also worked as a researcher at the Royal Veterinary College, UK and as a consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization and EU development projects identifying the costs and benefits associated with the control of livestock and zoonotic diseases. I worked for more than ten years in clinical veterinary practice and volunteered with Vets Beyond Borders for the Sikkim Anti-Rabies and Animal Health project in India.

    Teaching area

I am responsible for teaching epidemiology in the School of Veterinary and Life Sciences. I coordinate and teach VET392 One Health with Ihab Habib and Bethany Jackson and VET546 Advanced Topics in Veterinary Science.

I am the Academic Chair for the Masters in Veterinary Science (Veterinary Surveillance) M1121, and I am the Unit Coordinator for: VET641 Principles of Epidemiology; VET642 Practical Applications of Epidemiology; VET699 Epidemiological Studies: Design and Analysis; VET649 Veterinary Studies Masters Research Dissertation

I also coordinate and teach Public Health and Epidemiology (VET656) for the Sir Walter Murdoch School of Public Policy and International Affairs.
