Professor Peter Drummond
BSc (Hons), PhD

Professor in Psychology

About me

Qualifications. I graduated with a PhD in psychology from the University of Queensland in 1983, and am currently a Professor of Psychology at Murdoch University.  I am registered with the Psychologists Board of Australia (clinical specialization), and am eligible for membership of the Australian Psychological Society and its Clinical College.

Research and scholarship.  The broad theme of my research has been to examine psychological processes from a physiological perspective, and to apply this knowledge to investigate the mechanism and treatment of psychological and medical conditions. My specific areas of interest are the mechanism and treatment of chronic pain, the psychophysiology of emotions and their impact on health, using peer education to promote health knowledge in refugees from West Africa, and understanding migraine and other forms of headache.

Teaching and learning. I teach health psychology and behavioural medicine in the clinical psychology program a tMurdoch University, supervise clinical psychology trainees in their internal placement, and supervise dissertations of students enrolled in the Master of Applied Psychology, Doctor of Psychology, PhD and combined clinical masters/PhD programs. As well, I contribute to an undergraduate unit in biological psychology and an honours research preparation placement, and supervise students in their honours and bachelor of psychology projects.

Research areas

Mechanism and treatment of chronic pain

This research has been supported by grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, Medtronic Australasia, the Medical Research Council of Western Australia, Medtronic Australasia, St Jude Medical, and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. The research has helped to clarify the mechanism of pain and autonomic disturbances in complex regional pain syndrome, a baffling condition that sometimes develops after nerve or tissue injury to a limb. In the past ten years I have participated in several international workshops on complex regional pain syndrome, written an editorial commentary on this condition in the Lancet, written review papers and book chapters on the condition, and authored and co-authored many research articles. I also joined the editorial boards of specialist pain journals and have reviewed many papers on various aspects of pain.

Mechanisms of migraine and other forms of headache

This research has been supported by grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia and the U.K. Migraine Trust. I am currently a board member of Headache and Migraine W.A., a community group that is tackling the problems faced by migraine sufferers at home, school and work. This research has also involved studying the normal control of blood flow and sweating in the face, and the mechanism of autonomic disorders that involve the facial circulation.

Psychophysiology of emotions and their impact on health

These studies have clarified the effects of stress and stress management on susceptibility to infectious illness; the psychophysiology of anger; cardiovascular responses to psychological stress; and the psychological treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, pain associated with burns, social anxiety, anger, and post-traumatic stress disorder. I also recently led a project that aimed to promote health knowledge in refugees from West Africa who had settled recently in Western Australia. The project was supported by grants from Healthway and the W.A. Department of Health and helped to develop and assess a model of peer education in a vulnerable population
