Dr Victor Alvarez

Senior Research Fellow

About me

I have a Ph.D with European Doctorate Mention in Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and I work as a Senior Research Fellow at Murdoch University, Western Australia. In my current role, I assist research initiatives in TEL, including coordination of cross-disciplinary research at Murdoch University, and collaborations with other Australian and international research initiatives.

I have lectured computer science and telecommunications and collaborated with research groups at KU Leuven, University of Oviedo, Stockholm University and Open University of the Netherlands. I am also member of the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning, and the Australian and New Zealand mobile learning group.

Before coming to Australia, I coordinated a work package in the European project “Innovative Technologies for an Engaging Classroom”. In Australia, I was part of the advisory board for the 2016 Technology Outlook for Australian Tertiary Education (NMC Horizon report) and I was member of the Local Program Committee for the World Wide Web Conference 2017 in Perth.

I’m passionate about nature, outdoors and travelling. I also like photography, and I’ve used it for a citizen science project. Some of my photos are available on Instagram and 500px.

Teaching area

I have lectured computer science and telecommunications at the University of Oviedo, Spain, and coordinate Erasmus mobility programmes with the Open University of the Netherlands, and Stockholm University.

I have given seminars and talks for European research networks and Stockholm University.

I participate regularly in the supervision of Master and PhD dissertations.

Research areas

Much of my research and teaching over the years has focused on different aspects of e-learning and learning technologies, including mobile learning, multi-sensory interaction, augmented reality and learning analytics.

My research examines how learners interact with information, relying on technology, qualitative and quantitative methods, sensing devices and multi-sensory displays. Applications of this research include technology enhanced learning, music, health education and practice, marine biology, research information systems and citizen science.

Current projects

At present, my research proposes a cross-disciplinary and evidence-based study of human learning.

My current projects include:

Citizen science and social media impact of ecological research: Study on southern right whales in South West Australia, with Murdoch University Cetacean Research Unit.

The Value of Difference: A serious game is to demonstrate the value of difference in the workplace, specifically how diverse people (race, age, sexuality, age, gender, ability etc) contribute positively to high performing teams, with Diversifly and Murdoch University IVES group.

Virtual Reality for professional development and training, with Bondi Labs.

Exploring the potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Wearable Technologies (WT) in capturing live experience and creating an immersive learning experience, a collaboration with Australian and European researchers.

Establishing a strategic approach to use and implementation of learning analytics (LA) in higher education, a study to improve student retention, with Murdoch University Strategy, Quality and Analytics.

Science of Learning project to investigate efficacy of learning in different modes through neuropsychology techniques using EEGs, with Murdoch University School of Psychology.

Awards and grants

I have coordinated a work package in a project funded by the European Commission Framework 7 programme. I participate in National research projects funded by the Department of Science and Innovation of Spain. I have also participated in a number of academic and private-sector I+D and research projects for social networking and communication, education and medical education and practice. Funding bodies include European and National (Spanish) research networks, and companies such as Nokia and Glaxo Smith Klein.
